ASP On the Road: In less than 3 weeks, 12 youth, 3 young adults, and 8 adults will be traveling to and working in Scott County, Tennessee, June 21-28. Scott County is located in northeastern Tennessee in the western foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in a rugged and scenic region. The beauty masks the 21% who live below the poverty line and the $24,600 median household income. Timber has traditionally been a major economic activity. Home away from home will be an old, once-used schoolhouse in Winfield, Tenn. There will be no air conditioning and showers are non-existent and thus will be built outside – garden hose variety. It has a rural character with a population of 988 (2006) most who reside along the main roads of Intersection US HWY 27.
Stock sales have been great! The youth have been selling during the month of May. The brokerage table will be open one last time Sunday, June 1. The response from our congregation has been phenomenal, and very much appreciated. The senor highs are closing in on their 600 shares sold goal. You can find updates in the bulletin inserts each week and on the map posted in the Narthex.
A Mile of Pennies for ASP: The red penny buckets will be in all worship services on June 15, as the 2008 ASP team is commissioned as God’s ambassadors. The congregation, children, youth and adults are asked to save their pennies for the next two weeks. At the end of each day empty your pockets and put the pennies or loose change in a jar. Bring that jar with you to worship Sunday, June 15. Four red buckets representing the four work crews who will be making homes warmer, safer and drier in Scott County, Tennessee will be at the altar. You will have an opportunity to drop your pennies in one of the buckets. It is hoped that after the 10:30 AM service the buckets will be holding 75,000 pennies. Please plan to bring you pennies on that weekend. Those of you who have been dropping pennies into the big red bucket in the Narthex all year long have contributed 1/6th of a mile of pennies (12,500) toward our goal of a mile. The senior highs thank you!
Construction Practice The ASP youth will be constructing picnic tables and repairing the playground train and play house as part of their preparation and commitment in serving with ASP.
ASP send-off will be held on Saturday, June 21 at 8:30am in the south parking lot. Everyone is invited.
